Preliminary Curriculum: Math

Objectives:

  1. To help students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts by providing a logical progression of subject matter, building on previous concepts, and by increasing the level of abstract thinking required each year.
  2. To enable students to develop sound problem-solving skills applicable to other subject areas.

Description:

The math curriculum for the high school will emphasize depth over breadth by continuing the math subject progression of the middle grades. The proposed course scope and sequence is rigorous and is designed to introduce age-appropriate levels of abstraction. The proposed sequences for meeting the graduation requirements of at least three years of mathematics vary based on the entering abilities of the students and are as follows:

9th
10th
11th
12th
Geometry
Algebra II
Pre-calculus
(recommended)
or
Statistics
Math Electives:
Calculus
Statistics
Linear Algebra
Discrete Math
Algebra I
Geometry
Algebra II
Pre-calculus
(optional)

These course sequences were chosen based on a logical progression from Trinity’s middle grades and are designed to align with the sequences of most other schools in cases of transfers in/out. Pre-calculus is recommended for 11th grade, but Statistics should be offered for students not wanting to pursue more advanced math in 12th grade and beyond. (Statistics is a practical math course, used extensively in the social sciences.) The 12th grade math elective will initially be Calculus, with more offerings (as indicated) over time as the size of the school grows.

The administration will work with students transferring into Trinity who have completed more advanced math studies than is typical for their grade, in order to find the appropriate course placement. Such arrangements may include (among other possibilities) an independent study; the taking of a course outside of the usual sequence (e.g., Statistics); or the repetition of a course with greater in-depth study or more extensive application of the subject matter.
