Preliminary Curriculum: Music
Objectives:
- To acquire and develop skills in choral and instrumental music.
- To develop the ability to understand, interpret, and appreciate musical texts through exposure to and performance of classic works of choral and instrumental music from a variety of periods.
- To develop students’ knowledge and understanding of music history and theory.
- To recognize the fundamental connections of music with other branches of knowledge, particularly in the fine arts, the humanities, and the sciences.
Scope and Sequence:
Two semester courses in Fine and/or Performing Arts are required of all students for graduation. Fine Arts offerings will be phased in over the first few years of the high school, dependent upon enrollment and demand, and will build on the foundation laid in the lower grades’ fine arts programs. The following is a suggested Music course sequence:
| 9th |

Music Theory (1 semester) |
Choral or Chamber Ensembles—Smaller groups of singers than the full chorus, sometimes focused on a particular musical genre. The chamber ensemble is an auditioned choral group with 16 singers. Along with the Chorus, will perform for various school functions and may also participate in local/regional choral competitions.
Band and Instrumental Ensembles—These musical groups may include symphonic band, pep band, orchestra, handbells, jazz ensemble, or other instrumental ensembles. Offerings will depend upon enrollment level and interest.
History of Music—This course will challenge students to understand music in relation to history and culture, including the philosophy of Francis Schaeffer.
Music Theory—A course developing students’ knowledge of musical notation and performance traditions. Includes analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of a variety of samples of music.
Composition and Improvisation—Study of the theory and techniques of composition, including styles and characteristics of music from various periods and genres. Practice in composition and improvisation; may require the composition of a brief individual piece for performance at a school-sponsored event.
Private Instrumental Lessons—Individual or small-group lessons on various woodwind, brass, percussion, or string instruments may also be offered either during the school day or as a cocurricular activity.
Note: Many, if not most, of the above groups may first be offered as (noncredit) co-curricular activities, particularly during the beginning years of Trinity’s high school. The expectation is that over time, growing HS enrollment and continuing interest arising from a strong middle-grades music program will make it possible for Trinity to offer a number of (for-credit) music courses during the school day.
