Preliminary Curriculum: Health and Fitness

Objectives:

  1. To increase students’ appreciation of our bodies as temples of God’s Spirit, and to foster respectful stewardship of this gift.
  2. To develop students’ knowledge of and skills in a variety of physical activities and sports that they will be able to participate in and enjoy throughout their lives.
  3. To promote students’ health and overall well-being through structured and unstructured physical activity.
  4. To provide instruction for students on health- and wellness-related topics such as nutrition, personal health, injury prevention and safety, and substance abuse.

Scope and Sequence:

A one-half credit course dealing with health and wellness issues will be required for graduation. Fitness courses at the high school level will be noncredit and will focus on the development of a lifelong habit of physical activity, with the primary goals of fitness and exercise proficiency.

A variety of possible fitness courses are being considered, including such offerings as aerobics, first aid, orienteering, biking, weight training, pilates, golf, and tennis.

Health and Fitness will be offered annually at 9th grade and will cover topics such as nutrition, mental and emotional health, substance abuse, eating disorders, and the importance of physical activity.

Interscholastic athletics programs (sports) will also be offered. Trinity’s high school sports offerings will build on the strengths of Trinity’s middle-grades sports programs and will grow as enrollment and interest permit.
