Trinity High School Athletics                                            Athletic Participation Form: '06-'07
    The Early Years

Since the inception of its athletic program in 1999, Trinity School has been blessed with enthusiastic and talented coaches who have enabled the school’s athletic programs to experience growth and great success. Success is defined in many ways at Trinity School. Trinity athletic teams have been successful in the win-loss columns and have won numerous championships. However, the success that we are most excited about is the sense of community our athletic teams have helped to create. Over 80% of our middle grades students participated on an athletic team this school year. These students have experienced individual growth through both their successes and failures. Most significant is the environment that they have helped to create where the younger students coming up behind them are anxiously awaiting their turn to participate on a Trinity School athletic team. It is the philosophy of the Trinity School athletic department to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to participate on an athletic team. At the same time we are striving for excellence. Therefore, while we will have tryouts and selection of most teams, we aim to provide at least one “no-cut” option in each of the three seasons. Our goal is for this to be a policy for both middle and upper grades.

As we begin Trinity High School in 2006-07, we are planning for volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer to be teams comprised of 6th - 9th graders. The basketball teams may have enough players to be a junior varsity team, but it is more likely that they will be middle school teams as well. The cross country and track teams will compete in both varsity and 9th grade competitions, depending upon availability. We plan for the golf team to compete at the varsity level, as well as at middle school. Swimming, baseball and lacrosse will continue to be supported as club teams.

When the time is right we plan to join the NCISAA – North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association. We must first join a conference to be eligible for NCISAA membership, which requires that we field a varsity team in at least one sport for each gender in all three seasons. We might reach this goal in our second year (07-08), but it is much more likely that in our third year (08-09) our program will have expanded to the point where we qualify for NCISAA. As we grow, different sports may field different levels of teams. For example, we may have a MS volleyball team and a varsity volleyball team in the 2nd or 3rd year. Within a few years, we would be able to add the junior varsity team in to complete the program. Golf and cross country, on the other hand, are only offered as varsity sports in high school. In summary, our different sports will progress and mature at different paces, as the nature of the sport and the interest level of the student body dictate.

The athletic program will be developed according to the numbers of participants and skill level in each sport and within the parameters set by the NCISAA. We may have a few limitations due to small numbers, but we will also have many opportunities. The Trinity School Athletic Department is excited about creating the programs and providing the opportunities.

We invite any interested parent to come talk to our Athletic Director, Sue Eckstein, or any of our coaches, about our current programs, our passion for sport, our values as a Christian school seeking serious competition, or any particular questions you may have about athletics. We are well aware of the challenges of launching a high school athletic program, but we are very excited. Trinity’s current athletic program has grown from scratch back in 1999 into a vibrant and healthy middle grades program. We are committed to seeing that same level of excellence and enthusiasm in our high school program, and we are excited to take Trinity sports to the next level.

Go Lions!!
