Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will the mission of THS be different from that of the lower school?

The mission statement applies to Trinity School, of which the High School will be one part. However, the mission statement has implications for the High School that will be different than for other divisions of the school. A rich education for a 10th grader will be different compared to that for a 3rd grader. Unhurried means something different for a high school student compared to a kindergartner. For a better understanding of Trinity’s mission in regard to the High School, see the Philosophy statement.

What co-curricular activities will be offered?

In addition to sports (see below), co-curricular offerings will be determined by the interests of the students and the skills of the faculty. Anticipated activities include clubs such as yearbook/journalism, drama, music, fine arts, computer/electronics, and foreign language. In addition, an outdoor education program is being considered that will offer a noncompetitive, athletically challenging alternative for students.

How much choice will there be in electives?

The number of electives will be limited in the early years and will grow as the school grows. Advanced electives in science (e.g., Biology), math (e.g., Calculus), history, and foreign language are anticipated in the early years.

Will the High School offer Advanced Placement (AP) classes?

The task force is committed to providing advanced studies in a number of areas which will prepare our high school students well for college. We are wrestling with whether those advanced courses should be taught as APs, since many AP courses sacrifice a deep understanding of subject matter for breadth in order to cover all the material that will be on the AP test. We are also considering ways in which gifted students can take the AP tests in areas where they have done advanced study.

How many grades will the High School offer in first years?

The plan is to begin with 9th grade in the 2006–07 year and add an additional grade each year, so that by 2009–10, the High School will have at least one section each of grades 9–12.

Where will the High School be housed?

During the first year, the school will bring in additional modular classrooms to provide the extra space necessary for the High School. If the capital campaign is approved and successful, a new wing of the main classroom building is anticipated to be finished in time for the second year (the 2007–08 school year).

How long will the school day be?

This issue is still under consideration by the task force, and no recommendation has been made as yet.

What sports will be offered?

What will be the maximum size of the high school?

When full size has been reached, the High School will have the equivalent of three sections per grade, totaling about 250 students in grades 9–12. We expect that it will take a number of years to reach this size, however.

How will be the size of the classes?

The target size is about 20 students per section for each grade.

How will THS become known to colleges in the early years?

The task force has recognized the need for college counseling and is researching the feasibility of hiring a college counselor early in the course of the High School. This person will not only advise students on finding the college that is the best fit for them but will also visit colleges and college admissions offices to create an awareness of Trinity.
