Our pre-grammar program is to be a rich experience of learning and not simply a preparation for learning. Such learning takes place through a curriculum that involves the student in making and doing, and in attending closely to books and nature. The children will listen to living books; will carry on conversations with the teacher about what they experience; will listen to fine music; and will draw, sing, and play. Some of these children will be ready to read, and our classrooms will have books for them. All of these kindergartners need to develop the tools necessary for reading: the ability to discern subtle shapes and sounds, to think and comprehend, and to focus attention on books and nature. Small motor work like stringing beads and cutting shapes prepares the students for writing. The children will develop socially as they engage in free play under the masterly inactivity of the teacher and as they are instructed directly in mannerly behavior. All of this learning will go on in an unhurried manner that honors the pace of the childs development.
