Trinity After School Program
E-mail: AfterSchool@trinityschoolnc.org
In the 2007-2008 school year, Trinity School launched its own on-campus after school program called the Trinity Neighborhood, for Trinity students in grades 1-5. (The Trinity Board of Trustees approved a vision statement for this program in March. ) Our After School Program Director, Cely Chicurel, known to many in the Trinity community, brings this vision to life and has created a program which is distinctively Trinity in its ethos.
Trinity Neighborhood (Grades 1-5)
The Trinity Neighborhood supports the schools mission by offering care for Trinity students whose parents need assistance from schools dismissal until 5:30 pm. The Trinity Neighborhood reinforces Trinity's Christian mission , and it honors our commitment to unhurried education, leaving children much time for unstructured play and opportunities to extend their learning informally after school. Students who are engaged in clubs and other activities after school are able to go to and from the Neighborhood. We founded this program in order to support the families who must work jobs which are not flexible enough to pick up children at our normal dismissal times.
Cely Chicurel is an experienced educator, art instructor, and after school director. With her husband, Bill, she has run Celys House, an after school program which many of our families have used over the past few years. We are delighted that she is available to us now for the establishment of our program. A committed Christian who is trained in Christian Education, she brings a wealth of experience to this job. What is more, her core values resonate deeply with those of our school, and we could not be more pleased with the person God has brought us.
A few details which you should know : The program is housed in the back of the first modular (in what is now the TK classroom, the high school teachers work areas, and the teacher workroom, with easy access to the restrooms). We serve up to 30 Trinity students, in grades 1-5. Cely supervises two teachers and divides the students into two age groups. The program includes snack time, supervised unstructured play, rest time, and a wonderfully unhurried experience with books and things (including art, one of Celys specialties). The cost of the program is $300/month for the nine-month school year ($2,700 a year), for five days a week. Families desiring to use the program for selected days or on occasion should contact Celywe givie priority to families who can utilize the program for five days. Admission is granted to Trinity families on a first come, first served basis. Please contact Cely Chicurel directly at 919-929-3591 with any questions.
Trinity Lions on Campus (Grades 6-10)
We also run a program for students in grades 6-10 next year called Trinity Lions on Campus (TLC), which operates from 3-5:30 pm five days a week. This program provides supervision for all students in these grades who are, for whatever reason, on campus after dismissal. Parents may purchase a pass for each athletic season ($50 for the shorter fall season; $75 for the longer winter and spring seasons). We realize that some students need to be on campus for reasons other than athletics, but since athletics drive the after school traffic in these grades, we have organized this on the athletic calendar. Drop-ins, for whatever reason, are charged $10/day. This program is administered by the Trinity staff under the direction of our Athletic Director, Sue Eckstein. The level of supervision is commensurate with the students ages and maturityhigh school students have more freedom than middle schoolers.
We welcome students on campus after schoolwe want Trinity to be a neighborhood and a place of community. But as the school has grown, it has become more difficult and less safe to let students wander about, unsupervised. The two after school programs mentioned here provide safe, mission-appropriate supervision to the students who participate. Let me remind all parents that if you are not participating in these programs and your child is on campus after school, he or she must be accompanied by an adult who is responsible and attentive. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation in this matter.
