Service Learning and Leadership

Service to others is a natural expression of the Christian life. Trinity School students are encouraged to be an active and visible presence in serving the communities of Durham and Chapel Hill. Students of all ages participate in service projects, fundraisers, and service-learning opportunities throughout their years at Trinity.

Trinity sponsors a number of school-wide service opportunities each year. Since 2012, Trinity students have participated in the Run for Mukhanyo, a fundraiser for Mukhanyo Christian Academy, a school in South Africa. Students have also worked at the MLK Day of Service and participated in the Alternative Spring Break service trip to the Dominican Republic. In addition, each of Trinity’s athletic teams participates in a service project chosen by the students.

Our Lower School students join with their teachers and others in a variety of outreach projects, including a collection for the local animal shelter, a canned food drive for the Durham Rescue Mission, and writing letters to our troops.

Our Middle School students participate in an annual Day of Service and volunteer at local organizations, including the NC Food Bank, Durham Parks and Rec, SEEDS, SECU Family House, and Reality Ministries.

Upper School students have the opportunity to take service-learning courses in which they examine complex issues such as hunger, homelessness, and illiteracy. These courses, which feature significant service components in our local community, include Literacy and the Augustine Project; Servant-Leadership: Serving Durham’s Needy; and our newest service-learning course, Social Entrepreneurship. A variety of noncredit service projects are also open to our Upper School students.

Through serving others, Trinity students of all ages discover the fruits of humble Christ-like service, deepen their faith, and learn servant-leadership skills. Service-learning at Trinity is an exciting and vibrant part of our community life.
