Director of College Counseling
Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill seeks a Director of College Counseling to serve as the primary guide and advocate for Upper School students and their families throughout the college admissions journey. This full-time, 12-month position reports to the Head of Upper School and oversees both a College Counseling Program Manager and Upper School Administrative Assistant.
Trinity seeks a Director of College Counseling who embodies the school's distinct Christian mission while providing expert guidance through one of the most significant transitions in students' lives. The ideal candidate will combine deep expertise in college admissions with genuine care for adolescents, helping each student feel "known and loved" as they prepare for their next chapter. This role requires someone who can balance the technical demands of college counseling with Trinity's holistic approach to education and character development.
The Director of College Counseling will counsel approximately 100 Upper School juniors and seniors through every aspect of the college search and application process. This comprehensive role encompasses testing strategy, college list development, application timelines, scholarship guidance, interview preparation, campus visits, essay coaching, and financial aid navigation. The position requires developing and delivering a four-year, developmentally appropriate college counseling curriculum aligned with Trinity's mission for grades 9-12.
Beyond traditional counseling, the Director leads workshops throughout the year and coordinates with higher education experts for specialized programming on financial aid, testing, and application strategies. The role includes providing detailed feedback on student essays, collaborating with Athletics on NCAA recruitment and eligibility, and working with the Arts department for students pursuing creative majors. Special attention is given to students following non-traditional paths, including military academies, gap year programs, and international applications.
Trinity values continuous professional growth through affiliations with TISSCA, NACAC, SACAC, and NACCAP. The Director remains current on college admission developments through conferences and webinars, appropriately communicating changes to families and adapting strategies accordingly.
To be considered, qualified candidates should attach a cover letter, resume, and any other supporting documents, such as college transcripts and certifications, to their Trinity application.
